Rehearsals/Performances:    Rehearsals typically run Monday-Saturday in afternoons/evenings with flexibility;

Please prepare two contrasting Shakespeare pieces, at least one of them comedic, lasting three minutes total.  Selections from The Taming of the Shrew are welcome, as are pieces that feature physical prowess and song/dance/magic/impressions in the style of the 1920s.


Character Breakdown:

Gentleman Hugo Dixon of Induction/Pedant: Generous, high society male, mid-40s.

Baptista: a wealthy father, 60s, modeled on Lionel Barrymore.

Katharina: daughter to Baptista, 30s-40, a smart, heartful, comedic character actor on the back-side of her career, modeled on Claudette Colbert/Jean Arthur/Myrna Loy.

Bianca: daughter to Baptista, 20s, a glamorous ingénue on the rise, modeled on Greta Garbo/Clara Bow/Gloria Swanson.

Vincentio: a Gentleman, 50s, modeled on a mature Stan Laurel.

Lucentio: son to Vincentio, in love with Bianca, late 20s-30s, young male ingénue modeled on John Gilbert/Rudolf Valentino.

Petruchio: a broke gentleman; suitor to Katharina, 30s-40s, a heartful featured player unaffected by his handsomeness, modeled on Gary Cooper/Spencer Tracy.

Gremio: suitor to Bianca, male 40s-50s, a dashing well-appointed former featured player now making a career of martinis, modeled on William Powell.

Hortensio: suitor to Bianca, male 30s-40s, a multi-skilled entertainer modeld on Al Jolson/Lon Chaney.

Tranio: servant to Lucentio, male/female late 20s-30s, an outstanding physical comedian modeled on Buster Keaton.

Biondello: servant to Lucentio, male/female 20s, an outstanding physical and verbal comedian modeled on Harold Lloyd.

Grumio: servant to Petruchio, male/female 20s-30s, skilled physical and verbal Clown modeled on Charlie Chaplin.

Lady of Induction/Widow/Tailer/Haberdasher: comedic character actor, 30s-50s African-American female of independent thought and physical presence.

Curtis: servant to Petruchio: teen/child. 


Servants attending on Baptista and Petruchio: teens/children, modeled on Bowery Boys.

Assistant Stage Managers

TSC is currently interviewing for Non-AEA assistant stage managers for its season productions, including IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY (November/December), ROMEO AND JULIET (January 2014), and THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (March – May 4, 2014). 

These are paid positions.  All rehearsals and performances will take place in Memphis/Germantown.   ASMs must provide their own in-town housing and transportation.  Workweeks are 40-42 hours and include physical activity, writing, administrative detail, and possible tech board operation.  Stage Manager is the immediate supervisor.
